STI Testing and Pap Smear Exams
On the day of your procedure, you will have the option to have swabs done for Gonorrhea, Chlamydia and Bacterial Vaginosis and also a Pap Smear. You can also have your blood taken to test for Syphilis. This is done by the doctor at the time of the procedure.
If you have a positive result, a nurse will call or email you (as you request) to notify you. You will then be given instructions about obtaining the medication you and your partner need. Your personal information will be reported to the Public Health Department as per the Public Health Act. This is so that Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) rates may be tracked. These people are also professionals obligated by an oath of confidentiality.
If you have a negative result you will not hear from the clinic and no information will be reported.
You may talk to the staff more about this on the day of your abortion procedure.
If you are concerned about other STIs (ex: HIV) you can contact the STI Centre in Edmonton at 413-5156 or talk with a doctor. For more information about STIs call 1-800-772-2437.
